Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts
about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The
initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter
names and other basic information from 5.4 million soldier records in
the National Archives. The facts about the soldiers are being entered
from records that are indexed to many millions of other documents about
Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers maintained by the National
Archives and Records Administration.

- The Civil War is a major collecting focus for the University Libraries.
Manuscript collections contain letters and diaries from both Union and
Confederate soldiers, homefront letters, memoirs, and contemporary research
files. The backbone of the printed collection, located in the Special
Collections' Rare Book Room, is the Elden E. Josh Billings Collection
which consists of approximately 6,000 monographs.

- Civil
War Maps (LOC) - The Civil War Map collection of the Geography
and Map Division consists of reconnaissance, sketch, coastal, and theater-of-war
maps which depict troop activities and fortifications during the Civil
War. Part of this selection contains maps by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss,
a topographical engineer in the Confederate Army. Hotchkiss made detailed
battle maps that were used by Generals Lee and Jackson. This selection
also includes maps that depict General Sherman's military campaigns
in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
