  • Center for the Study of the American Civil War - The mission of CSACW is to promote and inspire the study of the American Civil War by providing historians access to primary original Civil War resources like letters, diaries and journals via the Internet.

  • Civil War Rosters arranged by State - This is a directory of Civil War Rosters/Muster Rolls that have been found on the internet. Since only 50-60% of all rosters are on the internet, some units will not be listed.

  • Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System - The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter names and other basic information from 5.4 million soldier records in the National Archives. The facts about the soldiers are being entered from records that are indexed to many millions of other documents about Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration.

  • Library of Congress - American Memory Project > American Memory is a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections.
  • Virginia Tech Libraries Special Collections - The Civil War is a major collecting focus for the University Libraries. Manuscript collections contain letters and diaries from both Union and Confederate soldiers, homefront letters, memoirs, and contemporary research files. The backbone of the printed collection, located in the Special Collections' Rare Book Room, is the Elden E. Josh Billings Collection which consists of approximately 6,000 monographs.
  • Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion - the ORs can be browsed or searched from the Cornell web site.

Maps and topographical related sites

  • Civil War Maps (LOC) - The Civil War Map collection of the Geography and Map Division consists of reconnaissance, sketch, coastal, and theater-of-war maps which depict troop activities and fortifications during the Civil War. Part of this selection contains maps by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss, a topographical engineer in the Confederate Army. Hotchkiss made detailed battle maps that were used by Generals Lee and Jackson. This selection also includes maps that depict General Sherman's military campaigns in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

  • American Civil War Association - Experience Living History: What is "Living History" and what role do the members of the American Civil War Association have in the portrayal of it? Living history is one of the most dynamic mediums available to those in pursuit of the past.
