Here are some highlights
of work and projects for January.
1. Re-designed and
launched the new Civil War Gazette web site. We thank the good folks
at Jabez Networks for providing hosting services for CWG.
2. Started development
and design of the CSACW Shiloh Battlefield Tour web site. It is already
over 100 pages deep!
3. Initiated relationships
with several private collectors who have expressed interest in making
their personal collections accessible through the CSACW.
Areas of interest
include:
75th NYSV and
the 14th NYSC - 25 Civil War Letters
25 letters to
home, of Marcus Aurelins Wheeler during his service in the Civil War.
Dates range from May 21, 1862 to November 14, 1864. He served with
Company K, 75th New York State Volunteers and later with the Company
L, 14th New York State Cavalry (during the War part of the 75th became
the 14th Cavalry).
Hiram W. Bates,
Co. C, 12th Regt Mass Vols. Inf, 5th Army Corps
44 letters to
Hiram W. Bates, Co. C, 12th Regt Mass Vols. Inf, 5th Army Corps. They
are written by an educated Soldiers Wife, named Mamie, who understood
the hardships of the war and was very interested in the politics and
different campaigns taking place from 1883 through to 1865. Their
home was in East Brighton Massachusetts.
Six letters of
Sergeant James Shadle, Company G, 2nd Iowa Infantry and other Corinth,
Miss., documents
Six letters of
Sergeant James Shadle during his service in the Civil War and one
letter he received from his father. Dates range from January 22, 1862
to April 18th, 1864. He served with Company G, 2nd Iowa Infantry.
Owner also has 400+ letters, telegraphs, special orders, CDV's, etc.,
related to Corinth.
4. We began plans
for several 2003 CSACW Civil War Battlefield Tours, including: Shiloh
(April 11 & 12); Chickamauga (Nov); Franklin/Nashville (Dec); with
possible considerations of Gettysburg and Perryville.
5. We have been paying
very close attention to all of the primary resources (i.e., letters, diaries,
etc.)offered for auction on eBay this month. We are compiling a list in
a Word document that includes text descriptions and some images of various
items offered for auction. We will load this Word document on the CSACW
web site in early February and make it available under the CSACW section
of the CWG.
6. The CSACW is excited
to have the support of a private collector named Matt Woodburn, Franklin,
TN. Mr. Woodburn has a personal collection of around 50 firearms and/or
sabres. He is making them available to the CSACW Archival Center for historians
to study. A complete list of his collection with digital pictures will
be added to the CWG in the very near future.
News and Events
Don't forget the
movie "God's and Generals" starring Robert Duvall as Robert
E. Lee hits theatres on February 21, 2003.

The Mission of the CSACW?
The
mission of CSACW is to promote and inspire the study of the American
Civil War by providing historians access to primary original Civil War
resources like letters, diaries and journals via the Internet.
How
does the CSACW accomplish its mission?
The
CSACW largely accomplishes its mission by partnering with private or
individual collectors of Civil War resources who allow historians and
scholars to access private collections via Internet technology through
the CSACW web site. This partnership protects the private collectors'
"ownership rights" but still provides the academic community
access to these excellent resources for publication.
How to help the
CSACW?
1. Make a tax-deductible
donation to the CSACW. This will allow us to purchase primary resources
on auction sites and to host Civil War battlefield tours that enables
us to raise money to buy primary resources.
If you'd like to
make a tax-deductible donation to the CSACW or you'd like to partner
with us to further our mission please email us.
2. Partner with
the CSACW by providing scans and/or transcriptions of primary resources
you own (e.g., letters, diaries, etc.).
3. Spread the word
about the CSACW via email (e.g., how about forwarding this newsletter
to people you know would be interested in the CSACW and our web sites).
4. Go on a CSACW
sponsored tour of a Civil War battlefield. The cost for the tour is
tax deductible as our guests attend FREE in exchange for a suggested
donation to the CSACW. The first tour this year will be to Shiloh Battlefield
in TN. Other tours planned for 2003 include Chickamauga, Franklin/Nashville
and possibly Gettysburg or Perryville.
